The Singapore Armed Forces Volunteer Corps (SAFVC) was established to fortify the country’s armed forces. Through this program, Singaporeans and Permanent Residents alike are presented with the opportunity to aid in Singapore’s national defence after completing training.
The SAFVC is open to new citizens or Permanent Residents; men and women aged 18 to 45 years old who are exempt from rendering National Service (NS). If you are dedicated to national causes and have a spirit of volunteerism to boot, joining the SAFVC presents a good volunteering opportunity.
Partaking in the SAFVC program allows you to do the following:
According to several studies, most notably from Harvard Health Publication and the London School of Economics, volunteering is beneficial to your mental and physical health. Stress and depression are just some of the health issues you could address by signing up with the SAF.
Working with SAF means you will be taking on responsibilities that cater to very specific goals. This sense of purpose will allow you to cultivate pride and satisfaction in the fact that you are helping out for the greater good of not only Singapore but the rest of the world.
According to the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre, every year, volunteerism accounts for 0.46% of Singapore’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This amounts to $746 SGD. As a volunteer, you can rest assured that your services are of high value to the country’s economic growth.
SAF volunteers are afforded options, notably because of the flexibility of the Service. Training sessions may be spread out over the course of several weekends or volunteers can choose the on-camp four-week course. There are 17 available military vocations to choose from, thus you can opt for roles that match your expertise. Volunteers are only required 7 days of service each year and they can drop out of the program at any time.
If you have time to spare and desire to serve the nation, joining the SAFVC is a worthwhile option to consider.
